2019 Survey of Silvicultural Practices of Western Timberland Owners and Managers

Description

In the spring of 2019, Forisk completed our second biennial survey of management practices for institutional and industrial timberland owners and managers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. This report provides an analysis of silvicultural treatments including site preparation, planting, pre-commercial thinning, harvesting, and fertilization on 9 million acres compiled from 19 firms across the Northwest region. Results are presented for the entire region and broken down into three sub-regions: East of the Cascades, Oregon west of the Cascades, and Washington west of the Cascades. The survey focused on forest management activities completed in 2018 (from January through December), and costs and revenues from these activities.

This article summarizes results on forest management practices and activities. Data on costs and revenues for individual treatments are shared separately with survey participants and are not included hereA comparison is provided to results in 2017 for a subset of key silvicultural practices.
